SOULFLY Guitarist: 'Nobody Works Harder' Than MAX CAVALERA
April 7, 2006Barry Gramlich of NorthJersey.com recently conducted an interview with SOULFLY guitarist and solo artist Marc Rizzo. A few excerpts from the chat follow:
On touring:
"You get used to the road. You bring the clothes you can and wash them in the sink. Then you find a radiator to dry them. I've seen two laundromats since I've been over here [touring in Europe], not that I have time to stop. I wear these baggy workout shorts onstage made of bathing suit material, so I just shower in them afterward. You need clothes that dry real fast."
On "freaky" fans:
"We were being stalked. This crazy guy was sneaking into sound checks and claimed he was working with the club. When he was approached by the club, he said he was working for SOULFLY. He got bounced pretty fast after that. Fans can be borderline freaky."
On his intensive touring schedule:
"Every night when I get off the stage, I'm working on new stuff in the dressing room. People look at me like I'm nuts. This is what Max [Cavalera] has taught me. He's a tour dog who's been on the road forever. Nobody works harder. He's been at it 20 years, and I want the same kind of longevity and the ability to rely on nobody except myself."
On brushing up on the broad spectrum of styles he immerses himself in, such as the palettes of Al Di Meola, Paco DeLucia and Joe Satriani:
"I have another [solo] record to put out, hopefully by the end of the year. I have ideas to write. I'd put myself right now at about 7 or 8 [on a scale of 10]. A guy like Paco DeLucia can make an acoustic guitar intense, and acoustic is a challenge for me. I'm not there yet. I'm not 100 percent fulfilled."
